NBC Sports is keeping all of its broadcast teams for the Olympics at home and won't send them to Beijing to call the 2022 Winter Games, USA Today reported Thursday.
The threat of COVID-19 and the omicron variant forced NBC to alter its plans. The network had intended to have announcer crews in Beijing for the high-viewership sports of figure skating, Alpine skiing and snowboarding, but they instead will work out of a studio in Stamford, Conn., along with announcers for all other sports.
"We'll still have a large presence on the ground in Beijing and our coverage of everything will be first rate as usual, but our plans are evolving by the day as they are for most media companies covering the Olympics," Greg Hughes, NBC's senior vice president communications, told USA Today.
NBC has experience with the Connecticut setup. Most of the announcers calling the Tokyo Olympics over the summer were based in the studio, with crews on site in Japan for only limited sports.
Mike Tirico will anchor NBC's coverage from Beijing beginning with the Feb. 4 opening ceremony, and he'll remain there for the first few days of competition. He'll be returning to the United States to host the Super Bowl on Feb. 13 and will anchor the Olympics remotely.
The closing ceremony will be held Feb. 20.
