TOKYO, Japan: The Yomiuri newspaper has reported that Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is planning to visit Kyiv in February and hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskiy.
As chair of the Group of Seven (G7) leading economies this year, Japan has expressed its intention to continue supporting Ukraine, and also hopes to release a statement with Kyiv condemning Russia's aggression, Yomiuri stated.
Depending on the state of the war in Ukraine, Kishida will make a last minute decision about whether to go ahead with the visit, the newspaper added
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Seiji Kihara has said that as chair of G7 this year, Japan must consider the idea of visiting Kyiv, adding, "But nothing has been decided at this stage."
Earlier this month, Kishida called Zelenskiy to discuss the possibility of visiting Kyiv depending on "various circumstances," after he was invited by Ukraine's president.
In May, Japan will host the annual G7 summit in Hiroshima, and Ukraine is expected be a leading topic of discussion.
